Before You Begin
You do not need to call to see where your passport application stands. The State Department shows your status online once your application has been entered — usually about two weeks after you apply.
What You’ll Need
Have ready:
- Your last name (and any suffix)
- Your date of birth
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
Step-by-Step
- Go to travel.state.gov and open the Online Passport Status System.
- Enter your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your SSN.
- Read your current status — it usually appears about two weeks after you apply and updates as your application moves.
- To check by phone instead, call NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 with the same details.
- If your travel is soon and the status has not updated, follow the reach-a-human steps to request an urgent appointment.
Faster: Do It Online
Use the Online Passport Status System at travel.state.gov to check status any time, and sign up for email updates there so you do not have to keep checking.
